The Bridge                                                      Issue 38

Bridging the gap between research and practice

Welcome to the third edition of the Bridge to focus on the children and young people's occupations. There is news of the recent launch of the manifesto for developing the evidence base for children and young people's occupations and other information of interest to occupational therapists working and researching in this area.  Please contact us if you would like to comment or contribute to a future edition. 


Research manifesto launch in Bristol

The research manifesto for developing the evidence base for children and young people's occupations was launched at the College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section: Children Young People and Families national conference in Bristol on 17th November 2011. Dr Carolyn Dunford launched the manifesto with a presentation.  Dr Carolyn Dunford and Dr Katrina Bannigan describe the details of the manifesto in their article published in the most recent WFOT bulletin
Dunford, C. & Bannigan, K. (2011) Children and young people's occupations, health and well being: a research manifesto for developing the evidence base. WFOT Bulletin 64 46-52. So far we have received support from occupational therapists in the UK, Canada, Australia, Norway, Germany and the Netherlands.

Lorna Wales
Lorna is a part time PhD student at the University of Warwick, the title of her research is: Self-Awareness after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in Childhood. Lorna qualified as an occupational therapist in 1986 and gained a postgraduate MSc in Research Methods for Remedial Therapists in 1995.  She has worked in the fields of neurology and complex disabilities in the inpatient and community settings.  She is currently working as a part-time Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist at The Children's Trust which provides residential rehabilitation for children with acquired brain injuries.   Her research to date has led her to consider the issues of combining adult and developmental perspectives in brain injury research in childhood.

Benita Powrie

Benita is the Manager for Children and Family Services at Leeds Community Health Care NHS Trust. She describes how occupational therapists, occupational therapy students and Year 6 pupils developed a project to promote inclusion of all children in playground activities.

Mental health transitions for young people
Adolescence is a period of intense change for young people and a time when mental health problems may emerge or become more severe.  The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) has identified a number of ways in which mental health transitions can improve.
A new guide to Mental health service transitions for young people<http://scie-mailing.org.uk/4O5-MI4I-UW4W7-8N9BW-1/c.aspx> highlights some of the key recommendations for improving transition, as well as the Top 10 principles for practice<http://scie-mailing.org.uk/4O5-MI4I-UW4W7-8N9BX-1/c.aspx>.  These include ensuring young people are fully engaged and understand their mental health problem, treatment and support options, as well as ensuring that young people move to flexible and age appropriate services.
