YSJ staff present paper in Bahrain

Dr Tony Leach and Dr Margaret Wood presented a paper on Knowledge Creation and Organisational Learning to an international audience in January at the International Conference and Exhibition on Knowledge-Based Business and Education in Bahrain. It was a multi-disciplinary conference organised by the University College of Bahrain which brought together education, industry and business professionals and covered a range of topics around the theme of knowledge-based business, industry and education. Colleagues attended from many different countries including Egypt, Canada, the USA, the Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Japan, Kuwait, the UAE and other Gulf states.

A highlight was the opening keynote speech by Dr John Portelli from the University of Toronto who spoke about issues of diversity and equity in education. Another presentation of particular interest was that by Dr Bob Hofman who spoke about the creation of digital re-usable content generated by learners.

It was good to have the opportunity to meet colleagues from around the world and to contribute to this event.

Nairobi alumni celebrate in style

The Kenyan Alumni Society was formed in October 2010 and Mike Calvert's January trip was the first opportunity for the alumni to meet socially after that. The venue was the Safari Park Hotel, an upmarket hotel on the outskirts of the city. The society members were treated to a barbecue dinner and floor show. The barbecue was no ordinary affair: chicken, beef, pork, lamb and goat were followed by camel, ostrich and ... crocodile all with their own sauces to ease digestion. The dinner was followed by a famous floorshow by the Safari Cats – a fabulous display of dancing, costumes and acrobatics.

During his stay, Mike worked with secondary school teachers in Rongo, Nyanza Province and carried out staff development work in two universities: Strathmore Business School and Africa Nazarene. This work will continue on his return to Kenya in April.
