Principle Lecturer Post Announced

We are pleased to announce the promotion of Paul Smith to a Principal Lecturer’s post within the Faculty of Education and Theology. The post itself recognises the extent and complexity of our relationships with outside agencies and partners and our desire to work much more with local authorities and others to be responsive to their needs, accredit their work and recruit high calibre students from the wider workforce and schools. The post reflects other changes such as the appointment of Katie Fussey last March to work on knowledge transfer and income generation.

Thankfully, this post will not distract Paul from his teaching on the Foundation Degrees but will give him more time and space than was possible when the role was part of Mike Calvert’s role as Head of CPD. You will only notice the improvements to our responsiveness and are welcome to contact Paul (p.smith1@yorksj.ac.uk ) direct about issues associated with our joint working and he will discuss these with Mike and Katie as appropriate. We congratulate Paul on his apointment.

Karibu! Welcome!

This month saw the arrival of 6 Kenyan visitors to YSJ as part of a British Council supported project to help improve the quality of teaching and learning in Higher Education in Kenya. They

represent six Nairobi universities and are part of a 35-participant group who are following the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PCAP) which is also recognised by the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

The group are here to experience HE in the UK and, as well as having inputs on assessment, teaching and learning, action learning and ICT, they are following a programme of visits and excursions including a trip to the CETLs (Centres of Excellence in Teaching and Learning) at LMU and Sheffield University as well as a day trip to Leeds.

On Sunday 15th the welcome evening was presided over by Professor Dianne Willcocks, Vice Chancellor and was attended by Salome Gichura, Education Attaché at the Kenyan High Commission in London. She expressed her gratitude and satisfaction at our contribution to Kenyan education via the project and the scholarships that have been awarded to Kenyan students.

The group began their visit with the graduation ceremony at the Minster and have engaged fully in the life of the University. Mike Calvert will be working with them next in January in Nairobi and will pay at least another four visits to Kenya culminating in their graduation in October 2010.
