Welcome from the Head of CPD

Welcome to the beginning of a new academic year. CPD is looking forward to a successful year with record numbers of students and further plans for expansion. The BA Education Studies and BA Children, Young People and Families have both recruited above expectations and this is particularly gratifying for the new BA (CYPF) which is being taught to all three years for the first time. The Foundation Degree programmes have also recruited to target on site. Masters recruitment is also encouraging in Year 1 and 2 (as some progress to Year 2 with M-level credits from their PGCE or other programme).

Our new colleague, Pat Norris, brings expertise from the Local Authority and the Youth sector and she is leading a development of a new BA in Youth and Community to be launched in 2013. We will also be offering new progression routes for our FD students in 2012.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Smith to the role of Head of External Relationships and Katie Simpson as his Deputy. This means that CPD and the Faculty as a whole can respond even better to opportunities that arise locally and beyond. We hope to see you at different events that are held during the year.

Youth Work Success for Sangat Community Centre

York St John University held a special presentation ceremony, attended by the VC on Wednesday 14 September for 24 members of the Sangat Community Centre in Keighley, to acknowledge their successful completion of a course which focused on young people's social development.

The three week course, 'Youth Work and Young People', was attended by local Imams, Foster Carers, Nursery workers, parents and people who work in a voluntary capacity with children and young people and was taught by Pat Norris.

Zale Khabi, one of the Youth Work and Young People course attendees said:"The course has developed our understanding of the challenges faced by young people, as well as the importance and benefits of encouraging all young people to contribute, interact and participate in group activities, regardless of ability or background. I feel more confident now about how to support and encourage young people and make a positive difference in their lives."

International

Mike Calvert recently attended a conference planning meeting in Copenhagen. His link with the Danmarks Paedagogiske Universitets goes back to 2005. The next conference organised under the auspices of Concrit, an anti-neo-liberal group of academics and practitioners, is to be held in late May 2012. Mike has been invited to give a keynote lecture at that conference.

Mike is also organising an invitational research workshop for members of the European Affective Education Network for which he is Co-ordinator. This will take place on 2-3 July 2012.
