BA Children, Young People

We are pleased to announce the introduction of a new BA programme to complement our established, recently revalidated, BA Education Studies. This programme recognises the wider perspective of provision for and understandings of children and young people. The new programme, led by Sam Shaw, is being introduced this September and next year will see students at Year 1, 2 and 3. The latter group will represent a progression route for the FD in Working with Children and Young People

From Strength to strength

The foundation degree programmes FD in Supporting Learning and FD in Working with Children and Young People continue to grow. This year sees a record number of cohorts (9) with three in Doncaster and 6 at York St John. One cohort is funded by North Yorkshire Council due to a successful grant from the

Children’s Workforce Development Council

The programmes are taught by York St John staff and specialist staff from local authorities. Feedback from students is very favourable with respect to this which is reflected in excellent NSS scores. Students value the currency that specialist staff bring to the course and it means that they can have confidence in the vocational relevance of the programme material.

Training Needs of Volunteers within the Children’s Workforce in York

Graduate Intern Helen Turner has recently completed a placement with CPD Education investigating the training needs of a sample of volunteers across the wider children's workforce in York. Helen spent 6 months carrying out her research project and as a result produced a report detailing her findings.

The Internship was funded by the Learning and Working Partnership, a collaboration between York St John University, City of York Council and York CVS.

Nairobi Conference

In July, a two-day conference took place in Nairobi at Strathmore University. The conference, attended by DVC Professor David Maughan Brown and organised by Dr Mike Calvert, offered an opportunity to disseminate good practice at the end of a programme for university lecturers. The PCAP programme(Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice) has now been successfully run twice in Kenya and once in Rwanda. The most recent programme has involved 34 lecturers from five universities in Nairobi

The conference attracted delegates from Nairobi and farther afield including two from Tanzania. It is hoped to build upon this work with further courses in Kenya and beyond.

The students will return to Strathmore University for the graduation on 5 October that will be reported on in a future newsletter.
