Additional information
Individual recognition is focused on expertise, impact on student learning and context and is NOT determined by role. However, illustrative guidance is provided in the UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning (2011) on typical roles or career stages broadly associated with Fellowship.
'Descriptor 2 reflects main grade teaching responsibilities and is the expected Descriptor for all staff who undertake substantive teaching as part of their role. All the Areas of Activity, Core Knowledge and Professional Values must be effectively demonstrated whilst recognising the diversity of staff who, in different ways, provide such teaching and support' (HEA).
A more detailed exploration of what is required for Descriptor 2 can be found in Framework Guidance Note 2: What are the Descriptors at: http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/ukpsf in the section titled Using Descriptor 2.
Application process
Option One
York St John University staff can be recognized as Fellows of the HEA via the Professional Dialogic route within Recognising Academic Practice: The York St John University CPD Framework. This route consists of:

- Attending 2 professional dialogue meetings to talk about your practice with a mentor and how it relates to the requirements of descriptor 2. During these dialogues reference will be made to your portfolio.
- Completing a self- assessment document that will ask you to map how your evidence meets the requirements of the dimensions of practice.
- Providing references from2 individuals who are able to comment on how your teaching, learning and assessment practice.
- Attending a final dialogic assessment to explore how you meet the criteria of the UKPSF appropriate to descriptor 2 that you have identified as relevant to your own practice through a formal conversation and the evidence you have provided in your portfolio.

- A written account that includes 1000 words showing a sustained period of teaching and four 500 word case studies that evidence your success and effectiveness as a teacher and that demonstrates how you meet all aspects of descriptor 2. You must be clear in your application how you evidence each of the areas of activity and how you apply the core knowledge and professional values of the UKPSF, as it is against these criteria that the assessment You will be provided with a mentor to help you develop your application.
- Providing references from 2 individuals who are able to comment on how you support teaching and learning.
