Additional information
Individual recognition is focused on expertise, impact on student learning and context and is NOT determined by role. However, illustrative guidance is provided in the UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning (2011) on typical roles or career stages broadly associated with Senior Fellowship.
Descriptor 3 is different to Descriptors 1 and 2. This Descriptor builds on Descriptor 2, therefore all elements of the Dimensions of Practice must be demonstrated. Applicants are required to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of and 'a sustained and successful engagement with the UKPSF, indicating specifically how such knowledge, understanding and expertise is used in their approach to teaching, mentoring and their leadership roles' (HEA). A more detailed exploration of what is required for Descriptor 3 can be found in Framework Guidance Note 2: What are the Descriptors at: http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/ukpsf in the section titled Using Descriptor 3.
Here at YSJU we have translated the criteria of D3 into a self-evaluation document. You may find this helpful to reflect on as you gather your evidence.
Application process
Option One
York St John University staff can be recognized as Senior Fellows of the HEA via the Professional Dialogic route within Recognising Academic Practice: The York St John University CPD Framework. This route consists of:
- Attending an initial 3 hour workshop that provides support and guidance as to how to collate your evidence that you meet the requirements of Descriptor 3 of the UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning (2011) based on evidence from your L&T practice within an e-portfolio
- Attending 2 professional dialogue meetings to talk about your practice with a mentor and how it relates to the requirements of descriptor 3. During these dialogues reference will be made to your portfolio.
- Completing a self- assessment document that will ask you to map how your evidence meets the requirements of descriptor 3 and the dimensions of practice
- Providing references from 2 individuals who are able to comment on how your teaching, learning and assessment practice
- Attending a final dialogic assessment to explore how you meet the criteria of the UKPSF appropriate to descriptor 3, that you have identified as relevant to your own practice through a formal conversation and the evidence you have provided in your portfolio.
Option Two
Recognition as Senior Fellow can also be gained through a paper route. This consists of
- A written account that includes 1500 words evidencing how through your career you have developed and sustained a record of effectiveness in teaching and learning that incorporates the leadership and mentoring of others in relation to aspects of teaching, learning and assessment. The second part of the application is to provide two 1000 word case studies of reflective accounts of particular contributions or roles which:
- Have had a significant impact upon the co-ordination, support, supervision, management and/or mentoring of others (whether individuals and/or teams), in relation to teaching and learning.
- Demonstrate your sustained effectiveness in relation to teaching and learning and that you meet the criteria for Senior Fellowship.
- You must be clear in your application how you evidence each of the areas of activity and how you apply core knowledge and professional values. You will be assigned a mentor to help you develop your application.
- Providing references from 2 individuals who are able to comment on how you meet the requirements of descriptor 3.
